가삼로지을 12월 기획전시 'Missing Futures Inbox - 난 가끔 너랑 어떤 장면을 공유하거나 같이 이야기를 쓰고 싶어져'는 2020년 5월부터 시작된 서울, 시드니, 파리, 파타야를 가로지르는 작가들간의 교환편지 프로젝트의 일부다.
이 전시에서는 시드니 기반으로 활동하던 3명의 20대 여성 호주 작가들이 한국 작가들에게 보내는 편지형식의 작업이 보여진다. 프로젝트 기반으로 활동하는 작가 하나 후게듀어(hana hoogedeure)는 한국 작가 서혜림에게 보내는 영상, 그리고 같이 만들고 싶은 케이크의 레시피를 보냈다. 사랑과 환상 등에 관심을 가지고 활동하는 작가 릴리 라이(Lilly Lai)는 한국 작가 김윤정에게 보내는 미션들을 사진으로 담았다. 공예와 가면 등을 주로 작업의 소재로 쓰는 아멜리아 스켈튼(Amelia Skelton)은 한국 작가 김아라와 이미지적 대화를 주고받으며 완성한 마지막 이미지를 가면으로 만들어 보냈다.
이들은 한국작가들과 6개월 넘게 온라인 상에서 이름도 모른채 교류하며 개인사, 혹은 개인사가 전혀 포함되지 않은 이미지적 이야기, 혹은 미술에 대한 이야기 등을 나눴다.
호주 작가 3인은 한국 작가들과 6개월간의 일종의 '작업' 펜팔을 통해 유대감을 쌓았고 12월, 한국에서 첫 오프라인 전시를 열게 됐다. 이들 전시에서는 6명의 우정을 담은 이야기들과, 또 6개월 동안의 이야기들이 아카이빙 되어 있는 온라인 사이트 및 기록 파일도 함께 전시된다.
6명의 여성 작가들은 일회성으로 끝나는 전시가 아닌, 서로에 대한 유대감, 관계, 이야기를 쌓아가면서 연결을 구성하려 했다. 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나 19)에 친지와의 만남도 어려워지지만 반대 급부로 온라인 상에서는 다양한 형식으로 작가들이 관계 실험을 하기도 한 셈이다.
한 번도 본 적 없지만 서로를 6개월 동안 매주 알아가던 작가들의 이야기를 가삼로지을에서 만나보자.
Missing Futures Inbox - Sometimes I wanted to share a scene with you, or write a story together is the first part of a collaborative project across Seoul, Sydney, Paris and Pattaya. In April 2020, six artists began online discussions via email, facebook and kakao talk with the intention to create a physical exhibition of collaborative partnerships. The resulting intimate pen pal experience and works in Sometimes I wanted to share a scene with you, or write a story together offer to explore the unique relationships that evolved throughout this process.
These partnerships are Amelia Skelton (Sydney) and Ara Kim (Seoul), Hana Hoogedeure (Sydney) and Hyerim Suh (Seoul), Lilly Lai (Pattaya/Paris) and Yoonjung Kim (Sydney/Seoul).
This exhibition is the work of half of the partnerships, Amelia, Hana and Lilly, whose works speak to the conversations between them and their respective partners over the last seven months. The works explore distance, tenderness, language, relationships, frustrations, dreams, and intimacy across digital spaces.
The second and ongoing iteration of the project will be this website, an online archive of the exchanges. This website will act as an ongoing digital project that will be viewable during the dates of the December exhibition in Seoul, until the project's completion.
The final part of the project will take place in Sydney in 2021, an exhibition of partner works that will be complimented by a publication documenting the project in both printed and digital formats.

Wishing Well은 나와 혜림의 이메일 교환에서 부드러운 순간을 환상적으로 표현한 것이다. 우물 안에서 끓는 물약의 각 요소는 관계, 불안, 고립, 꿈과 죽음에 대한 것으로 우리의 편지 대화에서 직접 취해진 것이다. 물약이 완성되면 혜림이 서울에서 공연할 '당신을 위한 미션'이라는 세트의 지시문을 열게 된다. 결과물은 비디오와 미션과 함께 전시된다.
Wishing Well is a fantastical representation of tender moments in the email exchange between myself and artist Hyerim Suh. Each element of the potion brewing inside the well compliments a written sentence, taken directly from our conversations about relationships, anxiety, isolation, dreams and death. Once completed, the potion will unlock a set of instructions, A Mission for you, to be performed in Seoul by Hyerim. The resulting creation to be exhibited alongside the video and Mission.

👀은 아라와 이메일을 주고받으며 그 과정에서 추출한 텍스트와 이미지를 쌓고 감추고 왜곡하여 개발된 3개의 마스크이다. 마스크는 주고 받은 세개의 메일 중 하나에 해당하며, 메일 교환 전체 과정에서 반복된 주제였던 ‘보기’, ‘해석’, 및 ‘익명성’의 조합을 탐색한다.
👀 is a series of three masks developed through the process of layering, concealing and distorting text and imagery extracted from the email exchange between Seoul-based artist Ara Kim and myself. Each mask corresponds to one of the three exchanged emails, exploring the combination of looking, interpreting and anonymity that were recurring themes throughout the process.

윤정과 편지를 교환하던 중에 찍은 사진들이다. 작품은 유령과 외계인에 대한 환상을 주로 담았다. 내가 머물었던 공간에서 촬영했으며 유대감과 친밀감을 가질 수 있도록 도왔다. 파타야의 발코니에서 바라본 스카이라인과 파리의 집에서 바라본 강물을 보며 느꼈던 작은 순간들을 담아낸다.
A collection of phone images, some edited and some untouched. Created during correspondence with Yoonjung, they illustrate fantasies of ghosts and aliens that have helped me forge spaces for connection and intimacy. The untouched images of the skyline from my balcony in Pattaya, and the river from my home in Paris, capture small moments where I’ve felt a sense of peace and comfortability with my surroundings.
