안녕!
편지 교환을 나는 이 사진으로 시작하고 싶어. 시드니의 우리 집 주변 동네에서 나는 이 꽃을 보았어. 나는 필름 카메라로 사진을 촬영했지. 사진은 흐리게 나왔는데 나는 이게 더 아름다운 것 같아.
이 사진을 자유롭게 활용하여서 무언갈 해봐! 아니면 그저 시작점으로 여겨도 좋고! 어떤 선택이든 너에게 달렸어:)

For the first exchange, I wanted to start with this photograph I've attached. It is of a flower I saw in the suburbs around my home in Sydney. I took it on my film camera. It came out blurry but I think this makes it more beautiful.
Feel free to use the image, collage with it, or draw on it! Or just use it as a starting point, up to you :)

다시 한 번 답장이 늦어 정말 미안해.
혹시 불쾌한 골짜기에 대해 알고 있어?(…) 나는 식물의 모습에서도 불쾌한 골짜기가 있을지 궁금해. 식물이 우리를 닮으면 그 모습이 우리를 불편하게 할 수 있을까? (…)우리는 보통 식물들의 썩은 모습, 벌레에 뒤덮인 모습, 아니면 유독 강한 생명력을 보이는 모습에서 불쾌함을 느낄 거 같은데, 우리는 강한 생명력에 불쾌함을 느끼는 건가? 너 사진을 보고 별생각들을 해봤어.

나는 네가 보낸 사진 속 꽃을 최대한 그 식물이 가진 느낌을 찾아 이를 의인화해 표현해 보고 싶었어. 그림의 귀퉁이에 적힌 글자들은 사진 속 실재하는 것들이 적혀있어. 예를 들어, 꽃, 붉은 벽돌, 귀퉁이, 그림자 같은 것들.

Do you know about the "uncanny valley"? (…)I wonder if the uncanny valley can relate to plants? Is there a point when plants resemble us so much that it makes us comfortable? (…)I wonder if we get offended by plants when they rot or are covered in bugs? Or is it when they so large it overwhelms us. Are we offended by a strong vitality? Your picture made me think of this.

I wanted to draw the flowers you sent me. I wanted to personify the flowers, I was trying to express the ‘feeling’ of the plant. The letters surrounding the drawing are the facts of the image, For example, flower(꽃), red brick(붉은 벽돌), corner(귀퉁이), shadow(그림자), words that really represent the things in the picture.

나는 네가 지난 메일에 적어 보낸 것들이 좋았어.
(…)나는 사람과 식물의 관계에 대해 생각해보는 게 좋아.
나는 최근에 식물과 정원에 대해 많은 생각을 하고 있었는데, 네가 그런 식물에 대한 생각을 이야기한 것이 흥미로웠어.
나는 정원이 독립적이면서 하지만 공생하는 작은 부분들로 이루어진 마치 하나의 복잡한 집합체 같아. (…)그리고 나는 또 정원과 관련한 것들, 예를 들어 꽃이나 나비들이 일반적으로 기쁨 상징으로 연결되는 게 좋아. (…)
너의 지난 메일에 대한 답변으로 이 콜라쥬를 만들어봤어. 나는 네가 보낸 이미지들을 겹치고 그 위에 기쁨을 나타내는 것으로 꽃, 구름 그리고 태양이 웃고 있는 모습의 그림을 그려 넣었어.

I really liked the writing you sent me in your last email.
(…)I like thinking about the relationship between humans and plants.
It is so interesting that you brought these ideas up because I have been thinking about plants, and gardens a lot in my practice. I like to think of the garden as an intricate assemblage made of smaller parts that all work individually but symbiotically.(…) I also like that the symbol of things from the garden, like flowers and butterflies, are typically associated with feelings of joy.(…)
I made this collage in response to your email. I layered the images you sent me on top of one another and drew a picture of flowers, clouds, and a sun with little smiley faces - referencing that association with joy.

정말 정말 미안해. 답장이 또 늦어졌다.

이!것!좀!봐! 내가 최근에 무얼 발견했게!~! 동네에서 처음 가본 곳에서 우리 동네 마스코트 동상을 발견했어. 나는 이 마스코트에 별 관심이 없었는데, 최근에 다시 보니 이게 너의 그림을 생각나게 하더라고! 얘는 따로 이름은 없는데, 미래에서 온 소년이야. 그리고 동시에 철쭉이야. 왜냐면 철쭉이 우리 시의 시화거든. (…)
그래서 다른 도시의 캐릭터들도 궁금해서 좀 찾아봤어. 내가 찾아본 애들 중에 최고는 포동이야. 이건 한국어로 포도를 귀엽게 부르는 거야. (…)얘가 어쩌다 최종적으로 도시의 마스코트가 될 수 있었는지 모르겠어. 대부분의 캐릭터들처럼 얘도 일단 도시를 나타내는 상징물을 사람처럼 의인화를 시킨 모습이긴 한데, 얘는 좀 유독 막 생겨먹은 느낌이거든;
(…)내가 옛날에 했던 작품 사진을 좀 보내. 작품의 제목은 "미래 같은 것"이야. 이 작품이 우리가 지금 하는 이야기들과 관련한 이야기를 할 수 있을 거라고 생각해서 골라보았어. 우리 동네 마스코트는 미래에서 온 소년이니까 미래 산업을 상징하는 듯한 옷을 입고 있거든? 이런 복장은 내가 어렸을 때, 만화나 영화에서 주로 미래를 다룰 때 사람들이 입고 있던 복장과 같아. 이게 벌써 20년 전인데, 그때 미래를 표현하기 위한 모습들이 현재에도 미래를 떠올릴때 당연하게 떠올리게 되는 모습들인 것 같아. 하지만 앞에 말했듯 이건 내가 어린 시절부터 보던 것이니까 동시에 이건 나에게 과거에서 온 모습이기도 하지.
(…)나는 마치 바다처럼 보이기도 하고 하늘처럼 보이기도 한 이미지를 만들었어. (…) 나는 어떤 모습이 쉽게 특정 맥락과 연결되는 현상에 대해 생각해보고 싶었어.(…)

L O O K what I found recently!~! I found this mascot in a town I visited for the first time. I wasn’t interested in it until I realised it reminded me of your drawing! It doesn’t have a name. but It’s a boy from future. and also It’s a royal azalea. The royal azalea is the flower that represents the city. (…)
I wanted to see more of these mascots so I looked into ones from other cities.
The best character I've ever found is Podong. It’s is a grape and has such a cute accent in Korean. (…)I don't know how he finally managed to become the city's mascot. Like most characters, he has personified the symbol that represents the city, but he looks a little haphazardly.
(…)I've attached some of my old works. The title of this work is 'Future-like' or ‘Something like future’. I was thinking about the source of the motifs in these drawings, or the associations I have with images. That first mascot wears clothes that symbolize the future industry cause he is a boy from the future. This outfit is very consistent with the costumes worn by people in movies or cartoons set in the distant future that I saw as a child. This is already about 20 years ago, and I think the things that people often think of when they imagine the future are still what people think of these days. But as I said before, it's something I've seen since childhood, so at the same time, it's something from the past.

안녕 아라야!
나도 미안해!! 나도 답장이 너무 늦어졌다. 하지만 이러한 속도가 우리에게 잘 맞다면 나는 괜찮아.
네가 지난 메일에 적은 글들과 보낸 사진에 대해 많이 생각해봤어.
특히 그 마스코트는 유독 인상 깊었어. 그래서 나는 너의 메일에 답으로 무엇을 보낼지 생각해봤어.

무얼 할지 오랜 고민 후, 나는 이 편지의 교환이 우리가 우리 주변의 것들을 조금더 "보게"만들고 있다는 걸 깨달았어.(…)
나에게 '보기'에 대해 생각해보는 건, 가면이 얼마나 이목을 끄는지에 대해 생각해 보게 해. (…)나는 최근 작업에서 가면을 많이 사용하기 때문에 가면이 생각나는 건 내겐 아주 자연스러운 일이야. 내가 무엇을 말하는지 알 수 있을 만한 사진을 좀 덧붙일게.(…)
나는 앞으로 우리가 교환하는 메일과 직접 연결되는 가면을 제작할 계획이야.

I am sorry too!! I have taken such a long time to respond to your email. But maybe it’s ok and we are going at a pace that works for us.
I have been thinking a lot about the email you sent last and the pictures you attached.
The little mascot you sent really left an impression on me. I have been thinking about what to send back and what to do in response to your email.

After a long time of thinking about what to do next, I came to realise that our emails have made us both really look at what is around us much more than we would have if not for this exchange.(…)
When I started thinking about ‘Looking’, it made me think of masks and how masks often draw attention to the eyes. (…)I use masks a lot in my practice so it was natural that i'd include them in this project. I attached some photos so you could see what I mean. (…)
My plan for the rest of the project is to create masks that respond directly to the emails we have been exchanging.(…)
It is winter here now!! But it’s not too cold, it was sunny and 20 degrees today, so it was very pleasant!

그림은 진행중이야. 어떻게 시작할 지 생각해 봤는데, 이게 좀 시간이 걸리네. 하지만 우선, 사진속 가면들을 너가 만들게 된 상황과 그 가면이 나타내는 감정들을 추측해 이를 그려보려 하고있어.
그리고 '보기'와 관련해서 또 생각한게 있는데, 단체 카톡방에서 너랑 나만 프로필사진에 아무것도 없잖아. 마치 그게 또 하나의 무언가를 보여주는 가면처럼 느껴지더라.
그림이 끝나는 대로 바로 보낼게. 내일이나 모레쯤 보낼 수 있을듯?

The drawing is in progress. I've been thinking about how to start, and it's taken a while. But, I am trying to guess the feelings and circumstances that led you to make these masks and then i plan to draw those feelings.
I also thought, in relation to ‘Looking’, that it was interesting that you and I don’t have profile pictures in our group chat. that anonymity feels likes a type of mask.
I will send the drawing back to you as soon as it is finished. I think I can send it tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

언제나처럼 또 늦은 답장 미안해!
네가 보낸 그림 진짜 좋더라. 메일함을 열고 그 그림을 발견하고는 엄청 신났었어. 그리고 저번에 네가 말한 카카오톡 채팅방에서 우리만 프로필 사진이 없다는 지적 참 좋았어. 우리는 심지어 서로가 어떻게 생겼는지도 몰라! 그러니 이러한 소통이 정말 일종의 가면이겠지.
나는 가면 작업은 끝났고, 어떻게 보내서 전시할지 좀 이것저것 해보며 고민하고 있어.
이건 정말 장난 같아-내가 이 경험을 어떻게 하게 되었는지의 반영이지.
나는 두 개의 그림이 더 있어, 우리의 메일교환과 연결되는 총 3개인 거지. 하지만 너에게 보여주기 전에 조금 더 이것들로 놀아보고싶어... 그러니 이건 깜짝쇼지!! 히히

I love the drawing you sent to me. Was very excited to open the email and find it there. I also really loved your comment in the previous email about how without profile pictures on our emails or kakoa talk group chat we don’t really know what each other look like! So this way of communicating is really a mask as well.
I have finished the masks and am now playing around with how I want to send them to you guys to exhibit.
They are meant to be really playful – a reflection of how I have found this experience.
I have 2 other pictures, so 3 in total (to keep in line with our 3 exchanges) but want to keep playing around with them before I show you... so it is a surprise!! Haha
